LRF-OCEHL have published a paper showing how insulin resistance (a clinical condition affecting around 40% of women of reproductive age) may impact lactation.

The team have found that insulin resistance impairs the energy producing units (known as “mitochondria") of mammary cells.

This image shows that insulin administered to mammary cells in the lab increased the formation of new mitochondria, whilst excess insulin caused the mitochondria to fragment.

This work highlights a role for insulin in promoting energy production to support lactation.
